In an eBay online auction, the bidding opens at a price the seller specifies and remains on eBay for a certain number of days. Buyers then place bids on the item. When the listing ends, the buyer with the highest bid wins. The seller has the option of stating a reserve price. If the bidding does not reach the reserve price by the end of the auction, the seller does not have to sell. This protects you if you are buying items to resell and need to sell at a greater price then you paid for the item.

In a Buy It Now listing, the first buyer willing to pay the seller's but it now price gets the item.
